U9 Waves Win Sportsmanship
OBEN Soccer U9 Girls Nominated as 2013 LIJSL Sportsmanship Winners
As the Long Island Junior Soccer League began to grow and play at higher levels of competition, there was a movement within the league to remain focused on their mission to develop mature adults and responsible citizens through the lessons of teamwork and fair play. The goal was to Build Character Through Soccer; a sentiment stressed through the important role sportsmanship plays in the development of players.
Today, Referees submit sportsmanship ratings after every game, and the LIJSL Sportsmanship Committee allots points. Winners are recognized with a sportsmanship award plaque and a patch that they are allowed to place on their uniform. This is the only patch players may wear on their uniform other than their club patch.
With great enthusiasm we announce The Wave had been selected as the winners of The Fall 2013 Sportsmanship Award for their U9 Girls Division. We are very proud of all our OBEN Soccer Players: Abigail Askeland, Kaleigh Bosch, Jenna Cody, Riley Ford, Ryleigh Greene, Faith Lingen, Makenzie Macchia, Mariana Panariello, Lesley Pineda, Chiara Rutigliano, Kate Santi, Page Sweeney and Brooke Vetter.
Congratulations again to all and keep up the great work!
Spring 2014 Message
Players, Parents & Coaches,
I hope this note finds everyone happy and healthy.
I would like to use this opportunity to welcome our new Players and Coaches and to thank you all for participating in the sport of soccer through our Club.
Our Club is organized as a 501(c)(3) entity under the Internal Revenue Code and is the largest youth sports organization in Oyster Bay – East Norwich with over 400 intramural and travel team players. Our program has evolved over the past several years into one that provides a singular focus on the training and development of our players. This is accomplished through the use of professional trainers from Intense Soccer Academy (ISA) that train and increasingly coach all of our players from pre-Kindergarten through U-19, and continues through a pre- season camp (8/11 – 8/15), tournament fee reimbursements and dedicated Goal Keeper training on Mondays (starting April 6).
The Club has worked on developing this program to help establish in our players a love of the game of soccer, while helping them prepare for the rigors of the sport at the Middle and High School level. In a town our size (less than 10,000 according to the 2010 Census) winning cannot be the focus of our Club as teams that stop winning generally break up. Instead, we aim to keep our teams together as children develop and mature at different rates. Very often the best player at U11 is not the best player at U17. This focus on maintaining our teams (always the product of hard work by all involved!) has paid recent dividends with the BU19 Storm being the fifth team to make it to the U19 age group in the last five years. In fact, our three oldest teams, Falcons (BU16), Endurance (GU17) and Storm have a total of almost 60 players still playing soccer locally and with their friends.
For our intramurals, the season kicks off on April 6 with the complete schedule being available on our website. Continuing as in past seasons, the intramurals will consist of professionally trained sessions followed by games. Developmental sessions will be held during the week for the older players and will also be run by ISA trainers.
The Club thanks you again for your support, without which we would not have any chance at achieving what we have.
Please do not hesitate contacting me with any questions, concerns, ideas, or plans to volunteer. It may take a day or two to get back to you, but I will. Thanks,
