OBEN Coaches Code of Conduct

All of OBEN Soccer Coaches are expected to abide by the following codes, policies and procedures. 

 

1.    Overall Goals of OBEN Coaches

1.1. Teach each player how the lessons from soccer can be applied to their lives.

1.2.  To prepare each player to successfully recognize and solve the challenges of the game.

1.3.  Improve each player’s technical, tactical, physical and psychological dimensions of soccer, along with their work-ethic and discipline to move them to the next level. 

1.4.  Provide a fun, safe, and competitive environment in which the kids can play and learn.

2.     Eligibility

2.1.  Candidates who are interested in becoming an OBEN Coach need to fill out and submit an application online at  www.obensoccer.org  

2.2.  All candidates must complete NYS Risk Management Background Check.

2.3.  If there are more coaches interested for the same team than spots available then "Coaches Committee” evaluates the candidates to select head and assistant coaches. 

2.4.  Minimum required coaching certification for OBEN Teams

            Intramural to U10  LIJS "C” License

            U11 to U14  LIJS "B” License

            U15 to U18 LIJS "A” License     

2.5.  Any candidate can be a head coach for only one OBEN Team.

3.     Dismissal

3.1.  At any time during the season, a coach who is not happy with his/her current role on the team is free to end his/her participation in the coaching of OBEN team with a written note to the Director of Coaching.

3.2.  Each coach/Asst. Coach will be evaluated every season in practices and/or games by DOC and DPD. Based on the evaluation results,  any time during the season, they free to dismiss any head or assistant coaches that is no longer adequately fulfilling his/her role and/or serving the best interest of the team. (Too many parents & player complains too many yellow, red cards during the game, missing too many games, practices, coaches meeting and submitting required evaluation forms. etc.)

3.3.  After dismissal, coaches are no longer permitted to contact any player on the team other than his/her son or daughter regarding soccer matters. (Other team or club, etc.)

4.     Tryouts (Travel & Pre Travel)

4.1.  Tryout dates will be determined by Training Coordinator and cannot be change by any coaches.

4.2.  No coaching or instruction will be given throughout the process of the tryout.

4.3.  Tryouts can be several days and consist of several components including, but not limited to:

                       Character/Attitude evaluations.

                       Physical strength and fitness testing.

                       Game situations and play.

                       Technical skill testing.

4.4.  It is Coaches’ responsibility to be sure any player who does not submit all completed documents not be allowed to tryout; tryouts will not be extended for such matters.

4.5.  Each age group tryout has at least 3 evaluators (OBEN Recommend 4 evaluators, head coach, Asst. coach, 2 Trainer) Trainers will be assigned by Training Coordinator. 

4.6.  Each evaluator will be given a list of eligible player, and then evaluators rank each player- "1” being best to number of participating players.

4.7.  Trainer’s evaluation sheets will be emailed to coaches committee. There will be a meeting for that age group with at least one member of coaches committee to determine the team roster. (Size of roster, number of team must be approved by coaches committee and determined by the number of participating players.)

4.8.  Cuts and offer of acceptance of the player will be made in person or a phone call by the head coach of the team.

4.9.  Any parent who wishes to speak with a coach in regards to tryouts must be directed to coaches committee or one of the members of coaches committee should be present. 

5.     Player Trades

5.1.  There is NO trading of players allowed in between any OBEN teams after the teams have been determined.

5.2.  Exceptions will be made if there are extenuating circumstances and coaches and coaches committee agreed that the trade will not offset any of the teams.

6.     Practice Sessions & Training

6.1.  Starting day for season training determined by Training Coordinator. Coaches can start practice with their team without trainer any time they would like before season training start.

6.2.  Training day, time and location will determined by Training coordinator coaches can request  prefer day, time and location but final decision made by Training Coordinator.

6.3.  Under no circumstances may coaches be allowed to change training day, time or location without Training Coordinator approval.

6.4.  It is coach’s responsibility to notify the team, trainer and Trainer Coordinator of a cancellation of the session.

6.5.  Director of Coaching and Training staff will design general training sessions to address the most pertinent needs of the age group. But ultimately the head coaches’ responsibility is to notify and inform the trainer for the team needs by what he/she sees at the game.  

6.6.  All coaches, at least one per week are required to submit their training evaluation online.

6.7.  All coaches must be on time, visible and available to all players, parents and trainers. 

6.8.  All coaches must dress proper practice attire (OBEN shirts, Jackets etc.)

6.9.  Coaches are responsible for safety of the each player.

6.10. Under no circumstances should any player left unsupervised on the field. 

6.11.  Any coaches that have any concerns/ problem with a trainer, training session or session plan and progress should directly contact the Director of Coaching.

6.12.  All teams are required to have two training session with a trainer. Extenuating circumstances, with an approval coaches committee, some team may be practice only one time with a trainer. 

6.13.  Any coaches that would like to practice with their team in addition to two training session with trainer can do so with an approval time, space and location by Training Coordinator. If that affects the training attendance than coaches committee can terminate the additional practices.

7.      Combine or Individual Team Training Session.

7.1.   Any coaches that can have 90% attendance of their team roster to participate in training session are eligible to have an individual trainer for their team.

                            If your roster is 14 you need minimum 12 players for the session

                            If your roster is 18 you need minimum 16 players for the session

7.2.   Team needs to maintain their attendance at acceptable level for individual training session, if attendance is under acceptable level two or more session then team will be combining with proper age group for a training session. Trainers submit their training evaluation with attendance after every training session.

7.3.   Coaches need to communicate the importance of participating in training session to team parents.

7.4.   Any age group U15 and up with one team, eligible to have individual trainer regardless of attendance. But if there is two or more team of same age group than attendance rules apply to all the teams in the age group.

7.5.   Coaches with the team combined training session must be with their team all the time and participate to training session.

7.6.   The team with combined training must be participate the combine training first 2/3 of the session than if coaches preferred they can practice last 1/3 of the training session with their team individually (90 min session, team must train with the trainer first 60 minutes, than coaches can pull out their team player to practice last 30 minutes) There are no exceptions to this rule.

8.     Playing Time

8.1.  In OBEN Intramural Program All players, regardless of practice attendance or performance are entitled to receive a certain amount of playing time: 

8.2.  In OBEN Travel Program U9-U14 Players will receive a fare amount of playing time which may be effected by players

8.3.  Minimum playing time for U15 and up is 1/3 of the game.

8.4.  Goal Keepers are exempt from minimum playing time rule.

9.     Tournament & Off season league

9.1.  OBEN Soccer Club, encourage all the teams to participate in as many tournament and/or off season league they can. 

9.2.  Tournament budget will determined for each team by treasurer and board and will be available for each team. If the available fund cannot cover an event for the team, then it is coach’s responsibility to ask the team parents or fundraise for the event.

9.3.  If there are two or more teams for the same age group, team may invite any players from the other team with the head coach’s approval to any tournament.

9.4.  Team cannot invite any player to play up for any tournament.

9.5.  If there are not enough OBEN players for the tournament then team can invite any player from other club but player must have LIJS pass.

10.   Positions/Roles

10.1.  Players will be notified by the head coach their position on the team. This will be general at first and will become more detailed as the season progresses. (Defense, offense, Mid, Right, left Attack, hold etc.)

10.2.  Position for some players may change throughout the year or during the game as the coaches deems necessary in order to serve the best interest of the team as different demands or situations arise.

10.3.  Head coach will appoint at least two players before every game as the team captains. Coaches must be sure that at the end of the season each player has had the opportunity to be the team captain.

11.     Tactical Philosophy  

11.1. Each team coaches will determine the system and style of play that best suits the players’ abilities to achieve team and individual goals. Director of Coaching may suggest a style/formation for the team but ultimately the team coaches’ decision is the final.
